Internal gear machining adopts power skiving. Its productivity is 3~4 times that of gear shaping. In terms of machining accuracy, gear shaping achieves DIN 8 grade while power skiving reaches DIN 7 grade. Therefore, when processing to the identical accuracy requirement, the potential productivity of power skiving can reach 6~8 times that of gear shaping. Power skiving is therefore an extremely cost-effective manufacturing process with the potential to replace gear shaping. It can deliver machining accuracy up to DIN 7 grade or better, with tooth surface roughness of Rz 4 or superior. Additionally, the machine requires a smaller footprint.
Although power skiving has many advantages over gear shaping, it cannot completely replace gear shaping at present under the following circumstances: The workpiece diameter is larger than 800 mm; Gear shaping has to be adopted when interference occurs between the cutter and the workpiece; Gear shaping performs better when the undercut space is less than 6 mm or the axial angle is below 11°. In the case of diversified product varieties, power skiving is not a favorable option from an economic perspective. Besides, the tool cost of power skiving is slightly higher than that of gear shaping.
